Inaugural PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference concludes successfully, reinforcing India's power electronics momentum

New Delhi, 9 January 2025: The inaugural edition of the PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference concluded on a high note, marking a significant milestone for India's rapidly evolving power electronics ecosystem. The two-day conference emerged as a technology powerhouse, offering deep technological insight, strategic dialogue and high-quality networking for the industry.

The debut edition attracted more than 550 participants from across the global power electronics value chain, with 89% representation from academia and 11% from policymaking and government institutions. The strong participation underlined India's growing importance as a hub for innovation, research and manufacturing in power electronics.

Making the conference highly knowledge-driven, PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference featured over 100 expert speakers and panellists across more than 15 technical conference sessions, two leadership roundtables, two tutorial sessions and an R&D and innovation showcase by leading exhibitors from around the world.

India today operates the world's largest synchronous power grid, unified under the vision of “One Nation, One Grid, One Frequency,” with a national transmission network spanning nearly 500,000 circuit kilometres. Against this backdrop, the conference highlighted the pivotal role of power electronics in strengthening grid resilience, enabling renewable energy integration and supporting India's long-term energy security.

Chief Guest, Dr D Saibaba, Additional Secretary, Transmission, V&S, Coordination, Ministry of Power, Government of India, emphasised the foundational role of high-efficiency power electronics in modernising India's transmission infrastructure and smart grid systems. He highlighted the country's commitment to integrating 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030 and outlined plans to develop indigenous HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) systems with support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Guest of Honour, Smt Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator (R&D) and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India, reiterated the government's focus on strengthening domestic capabilities in power electronics and semiconductors. She noted the growing scope for Made-in-India solutions across devices, materials and systems, supported by national policies, fiscal incentives and rising global demand.

In his keynote address, Dr Gourab Majumdar, IEEE Fellow and Senior Fellow, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, spoke on the critical role of advanced power semiconductor technologies in achieving carbon neutrality and sustainability. He highlighted how power semiconductors enable efficient energy conversion, long-distance transmission, renewable integration and electrification across the entire energy value chain.

Another keynote by Dr Mehrdad Baghaie Yazdi, Vice President — Systems, Applications and Software, Infineon Technologies, focused on how power electronics will shape the grid of the future. He outlined emerging applications such as DC microgrids, e-mobility, AI data centres and solid-state transformers, which offer compact, efficient alternatives to conventional grid infrastructure.

International collaboration emerged as a recurring theme throughout the conference. Prof Dr Leo Lorenz, President, European Centre for Power Electronics and Member of the Steering Committee, PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference, highlighted India's strong academic base and growing semiconductor investments, positioning the country as a future global leader in power electronics while balancing sustainability and environmental impact.

Industry leaders echoed similar sentiments. Mr Puneet Tyagi, Chief General Manager — Engineering HVDC, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, appreciated the conference for bringing semiconductor manufacturers, researchers and industry stakeholders together under one roof. Mr Steffen Beushausen, Technical Expert — Power Electronics, Bosch (China) Investment Ltd, highlighted the value of the PCIM platform in fostering high-quality exchange between global academia and industry, particularly within the Indian context.

Organised by Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH and Messe Frankfurt Trade Fairs India Pvt Ltd, the inaugural PCIM Asia New Delhi Conference set new benchmarks for technical excellence, policy dialogue and international cooperation. The successful debut edition firmly establishes the conference as a key annual platform supporting the growth and transformation of India's power electronics industry.

Following the New Delhi edition, the flagship PCIM Expo & Conference will be held from 9 — 11 June 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany, followed by PCIM Asia Shenzhen from 26 — 28 August 2026 in Shenzhen, China.
